# 1,057 police, fire personnel awarded gallantry, service medals on 80th I-Day

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced 1,057 personnel from Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence and Correctional Services will receive Gallantry and Service Medals on Independence Day 2026. Of the 301 Medal for Gallantry awards, 272 went to police personnel and 29 to fire service personnel. Regionally, 197 awardees are from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 51 from Jammu & Kashmir, 12 from the northeast and 41 from other regions. Separately, 92 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service were awarded: 83 to the Police Service, four to Fire Service, three to Civil Defence & Home Guard and two to Correctional Service. Another 664 Medals for Meritorious Service went to personnel, with 606 to the Police Service, 28 to Fire Service, 18 to Civil Defence & Home Guard and 12 to Correctional Service.
