Nearly 30,000 native trees have been planted at Lenamore Wood in Northern Ireland, marking the start of a century-long project to restore a fragment of the Atlantic rainforest. The first planting, reported by the BBC, took place in February and March 2026. Oak, alder and rowan now cover parts of the 41-acre site near Gortin. Northern Ireland has only 0.04% ancient woodland left, according to the Woodland Trust. The project, backed by Aviva's £38 million pledge, aims to rebuild habitat and support wildlife.
