# Government expects three in four Agniveers to leave forces after four years 2026-08-05T23:15:39+00:00 | India | Indian Opinion Desk The government told the Rajya Sabha that 75 per cent of the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme is expected to leave the Armed Forces once its four-year engagement ends, and said the first batch has not yet completed its term of engagement. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said in a written reply that 50 per cent of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman vacancies in the Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles have already been reserved for former Agniveers. Agnipath, launched in 2022, recruits men and women aged 17.5 to 21 for a four-year stint in the Army, Navy and Air Force, retaining up to 25 per cent of each batch permanently based on merit, medical fitness and organisational needs. Those who leave receive a severance package, skill certificates and other support intended to help them find civilian employment. ## Indian Opinion Analysis The 75 per cent figure Rai gave the Rajya Sabha is a projection, not an outcome: his own written reply says the first Agniveer batch has not yet completed its term of engagement. Two numbers from the scheme sit behind it, the cap that retains up to 25 per cent of each batch for permanent service and the 50 per cent of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman vacancies in the CAPFs and Assam Rifles now earmarked for an ex-Agniveer category.
