Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to intimidate and exert pressure on the Supreme Court through its MP Nishikant Dubey, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal on Sunday urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to take stringent action against him.
Mr. Venugopal said that Mr. Dubey’s comments against the Supreme Court (SC) should be seen as an attack on the Constitution. The SC should take suo motu action over such comments.
He said that the BJP’s open rejection of Mr. Dubey’s comments was part of a ploy to mislead the public. Mr. Dubey had made similar comments in his speeches in Parliament. But, the BJP had never attempted to control him. Other leaders from the BJP who held high parliamentary positions had also attacked the SC.
‘Serious situation’
“Such open statements against the judiciary will have serious consequences for the democracy of our country. Decisions are made by the court according to the merits of the case. Currently, a serious situation exists, wherein favourable decisions are celebrated, while decisions which go against them are met with threats and cheap allegations,” he said.
Mr. Venugopal accused the ruling party of making a mockery of Parliament by waxing eloquent about the greatness of Parliament even as it destroyed the opportunity for fair discussions and did not give even the Leader of the Opposition a chance to speak. Mr. Venugopal also accused the government of bulldozing legislation in Parliament, he said.
