Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday (September 14, 2025) lashed out at the Nitish Kumar government over the poor condition of the government hospital in Purnia.
He came out with the statement after making a surprise inspection to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Purnia last night ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on September 15, in the same district.
Posting a 7 minutes and 36 seconds-long video on his social media platform ‘X’, Mr. Yadav said that the health care system in the state has been in a deplorable condition for the past 20 years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
The leader of opposition in Bihar legislative Assembly pointed out that in the GMCH, there is no ICU nor the cardiology department and even the trauma centre is not functional.
In the video Mr. Yadav can be seen inspecting the government hospital and meeting patients lying on the bed and asking them about their problems they face. He checked the toilet as well which had broken windows. The video showed several patients including small children sleeping on the floor.
“Three patients are lying on one bed and the bedsheets of the patients are not changed even in 15-20 days despite the rule to change it every day under Satrangi Yojna. The toilet for patients related to orthopedics and disability surgery is two feet high. There is no cleanliness at all,”Mr. Yadav said.
From 2017, the Satrangi Yojana has been implemented in the State under which handloom bedsheets in seven colours (one for each day of the week) should be used in government hospitals and medical colleges on the bed of the patient.
Mr. Yadav said that GMCH is a medical college hospital but out of the sanctioned 255 posts of nurses, only 55 nurses were working and that too in three shifts. He added it means only 18 nurses are on duty at a time and if they are on leave, then even less than that.
He further claimed that 80% of the posts of doctors are vacant in GMCH and there was not a single permanent dresser in GMCH.
“There are only 4 OT assistants in the entire college and hospital and most of the 23 departments were closed. Medical interns have not received salary for the last six months,” Mr. Yadav said.
The RJD leader said due to lack of doctors, health workers, health equipment, health services and facilities in government hospitals and medical colleges, 10,000 patients go to private hospitals in Purnia every day.
“Corrupt ministers and officers of the NDA government spend thousands of crores of rupees to make only buildings to earn commission in corruption but do not appoint doctors, health workers, lab technicians, dressers, assistants etc. For commission, they buy health equipment worth thousands of crores but do not appoint technicians to operate them,” Mr. Yadav alleged.
He added, “Tomorrow, Prime Minister Modi is coming to Purnia in Seemanchal to shower false promises. Even after occupying such a high post, before talking petty and small things, will he not see the big flaws of his 20 years of Bihar and the 11 years of the double engine government of the Center?”
Mr. Yadav asked the Prime Minister to visit the hospital tomorrow in Purnia along with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said Mr. Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of schemes worth more than 40 thousand crores in Purnia.
Mr. Choudhary said that the PM will inaugurate the interim terminal building of Purnia Airport and the first commercial flight from Purnia Airport will also start.
