# AI and tech drive record 5.5 crore tax returns filed

Over 5.5 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed for assessment year 2026-27 by the July 31 deadline, with more than 42 lakh filed on July 30 alone, said the Income Tax Department. The record pace is driven by a technology-heavy tax administration. The Mint reports that artificial intelligence automates data processing, pre-fills returns with salary, TDS and investment details, and detects anomalies to widen the tax base. Last year, over 7.3 crore returns were filed, and refunds worth Rs 4.35 lakh crore were issued.
