His weight and abdominal girth initially prevented safe positioning on a standard operating table. He also had severe sleep apnoea, hypertension, prediabetes and other health problems. A 32-day very low-calorie diet, respiratory physiotherapy and intensive care reduced his weight to 172 kg, while his abdominal girth fell from 198 cm to 178 cm. The team also performed a tracheostomy after he could not maintain oxygen levels with CPAP. Surgery on July 24 lasted two hours and 10 minutes.
