# Air India Names Tewolde Gebremariam CEO As Losses Mount

Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as its CEO and managing director, replacing Campbell Wilson. The Tata Group-owned airline said its board chose him after a global search, citing his record in airline expansion, operational improvement and hub development. Gebremariam led Ethiopian Airlines from 2011 to 2022, during which annual revenue rose from $1 billion to $5 billion, according to The Hindu BusinessLine. His task will include improving safety and compliance, controlling losses and managing fleet upgrades. The Economic Times, citing Reuters, reported that Air India Group lost more than $2 billion in 2025-26, while The Hindu BusinessLine put the net loss at over Rs 22,238 crore. Airspace closures, an ageing fleet and delayed cabin refurbishments add to the pressure.
