Statues of B.R. Ambedkar were vandalised overnight in Hasnapur village, Unnao district, and Chandpur village, Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday. Villagers, mostly Dalits, held sit-in protests demanding action against the culprits. The administration installed new statues at both sites to pacify the protesters, and police said cases have been registered. The opposition Congress called the incidents an organised design to humiliate the Dalit community. Senior Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu said the vandalism sends a signal that Dalits are second-class citizens.
