# Amit Shah statement offer fails to break Parliament logjam

The government on Monday offered a debate and a statement by Home Minister Amit Shah on the police crackdown against student protesters, but the Opposition rejected the offer as conditional. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told Lok Sabha that the government was ready for a detailed discussion, provided the Opposition did not walk out or disrupt the House. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav insisted that the government must also discuss the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi responding. BJP president J P Nadda accused Rahul of shifting goalposts and denied that police fired at protesters, a claim Rahul has made. The monsoon session ends on August 13.
