Gaurs have nearly disappeared from these areas due to hunting, habitat loss and cattle disease transmission, shrinking the prey base for tigers. The move aims to boost tiger and leopard populations in the Eastern Ghats. Currently, 300-350 gaurs survive in parts of Papikonda and Alluri Sitharama Raju district.
