# Ashfaq breaks U20 400m record as Basant reaches high jump final

Mohammed Ashfaq broke India’s under-20 400m record with 45.81 seconds at the World Athletics U20 Championships on Thursday. He then clocked 46.00 in the semifinal. Sportstar reports that the 19-year-old finished third in his semifinal heat and reached the final, while Hindustan Times says he qualified for the semifinals. Ashfaq bettered his previous record of 46.05, set in April. Basant cleared 2.14m to reach the men’s high jump final. Amanat Kamboj finished sixth in the women’s discus final with a personal best 53.24m. Anshu missed the women’s shot put final after finishing 14th overall with 15.24m, 21cm short of the cutoff. Piyush Raj, K Ambriesh, Tanu Chaudhary, Amit Kumar, P Royshan and Dhanush Raj also failed to progress in their events.
