Dnyaneshwar Madne, posted with the 6 Maratha Battalion, called the victim's family claiming she had fallen and was hospitalised. Doctors at the government hospital noticed neck injury marks and alerted police. The victim's brother accused Madne of having an extra-marital affair and harassing his sister over it.
