# Assam beheading accused dies after jumping from police vehicle

A 30-year-old Guwahati man accused of beheading his wife and storing her severed head in a refrigerator died after jumping from a moving police vehicle early Monday, police said. Ramanuj Goswami was being taken back to Hatigaon police station from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital when he attacked the escort team and jumped near the Narakashur Pahar area, falling into a gorge. He was rescued and declared dead on arrival at hospital with severe head injuries. His seven-day police remand ended Sunday, and he was to be produced in court Monday. Goswami's family refused to accept the body, claiming it was not an accident but an 'encounter' killing. The Supreme Court in 2025 had directed the Assam Human Rights Commission to investigate alleged extrajudicial killings in the state. A magisterial inquiry into this death is mandatory.
