# Assam tables UCC Bill banning polygamy, requiring live-in registration

The Assam government on Monday introduced the Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill in the state Assembly. It proposes banning polygamy and making registration of live-in relationships compulsory. The Bill also covers marriage, divorce and succession. It sets the minimum marriage age at 21 for men and 18 for women. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said registration would protect partners and children from live-in relationships by formally recognising their rights. Congress, Raijor Dal and Trinamool Congress opposed the introduction and sought wider consultation. The Bill would not apply to Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam.
