Adults over 50 with abdominal obesity and low Vitamin D face a 123% higher risk of death over six years compared with those who have neither condition, according to a Brazilian study published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. The research, led by the Federal University of São Carlos in collaboration with University College London, analysed 5,520 participants from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The study found that visceral fat traps Vitamin D in fat cells, preventing it from circulating freely, while also interfering with enzymes needed for its metabolism. This dual deficiency amplifies inflammation and impairs immune function, accelerating physical decline and raising cardiovascular and cancer risks.
