# Bengaluru footpath clearances fail to keep encroachments away

A month after the Greater Bengaluru Authority began its Safe Footpaths campaign, vendors, shop extensions, parked vehicles and debris have returned to several cleared stretches, a Times of India ground check found. The obstructions were reported in Gandhi Bazaar, Hoodi-ITPL, Basaveshwaranagar, Vidyaranyapura, Dinnur Main Road and JC Nagar, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads. The drive was launched across Bengaluru to restore walking space and improve safety. The Times of India reported different figures for the clearance, citing nearly 850km of roads in one account and over 200km of footpaths in another. The authority has also asked Bescom to identify electricity-related obstacles. Residents want surprise inspections and action against officials who permit renewed encroachments.
