A Bengaluru techie, Anmol Agarwal, has argued on Instagram that even a Rs 50 lakh annual salary may not allow one to build significant wealth in the city. He calculated that after taxes and EPF of Rs 15 lakh, a monthly take-home of Rs 3 lakh could be eaten up by rent (Rs 60,000-70,000), maid, cook, groceries, gym, shopping, travel, and potentially a car loan, leaving only about Rs 1 lakh for investments. He also said a Rs 3 crore home today would cost Rs 6-7 crore later, making homebuying difficult until near retirement. Agarwal suggested moving to a Tier-3 city with a remote job or starting a business as alternatives. Hindustan Times has not independently verified his claims. Earlier, ndtv.com had reported a separate breakdown showing that annual expenses in Bengaluru could add up to Rs 6 lakh a year.
