The Congress denied BJP claims that Sonia Gandhi signalled for Vande Mataram to be stopped during an Independence Day programme at its New Delhi headquarters. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the full version was sung without interruption and that Gandhi had asked for a chair for Mallikarjun Kharge, who had been standing for a long time. A video of the event circulated on social media, prompting the BJP to seek an apology. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also criticised the Congress. Separately, Rajasthan BJP president Madan Rathore apologised after an incorrect musical version was played at the party’s Independence Day event in Jaipur. He attributed the error to technical and human mistakes. The full six-stanza song was also sung at the Red Fort, according to the reports.
