# Bombay HC orders Maharashtra to aggressively sterilise stray dogs

Bombay High Court on Friday directed the Maharashtra government to aggressively implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules of 2023 to curb the rising stray dog population. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad said sterilising adult dogs would stop procreation and solve most problems linked to stray dogs, including dog bites. The court was hearing a suo motu PIL following the Supreme Court’s May 19 order that High Courts monitor compliance with its directive to remove stray dogs from public institutions. The state’s advocate placed affidavits on the ABC programme. The bench appointed senior advocate Mihir Desai as amicus curiae and adjourned the matter for 15 days.
