The Bombay High Court’s Goa bench on Thursday overturned Tarun Tejpal’s 2021 trial court acquittal and convicted the former Tehelka editor of raping a junior colleague during the magazine’s 2013 event in Goa. The court sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed fines under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code. It said the trial court had relied on stereotypical assumptions about how a victim should resist or respond. The case concerns alleged assaults inside a hotel elevator on two consecutive days. Tejpal denied the charges, called himself a political victim and said he would appeal in the Supreme Court. Reports disagree on his surrender deadline. Times Now says the court granted four weeks, while The Times of India reports two weeks. The Goa government had sought the maximum sentence, citing abuse of authority and the need for deterrence.
