# Boston’s Big Dig soil turns dump island into parkland

Boston's Big Dig, a massive highway project begun in 1991, removed over 16 million cubic yards of soil. Nearly a quarter of that material was dumped on Spectacle Island, a former city dump that had been on fire since the 1960s due to methane from buried waste. Workers capped the dump with clay and soil, then planted 2,400 shallow-rooted trees and 26,000 shrubs to avoid puncturing the seal. After 15 years the island transformed into a park hosting osprey, red-tailed hawks and coyotes. The Big Dig also created 300 acres of green space including the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Official data shows carbon emissions in Boston dropped 12% as cars moved instead of idling in traffic.
