US researchers have identified a physical mechanism behind the frustrating learning plateau: the extracellular matrix (ECM), a scaffold around brain cells, loosens during early skill practice and rebuilds within a day, then stops once the skill is mastered. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, tracked this cycle over short intervals, showing the adult brain is far more dynamic than previously thought. Led by Assistant Professor Melissa Caras at the University of Maryland, the team used an enzyme to disrupt the ECM and found it slowed learning and, after mastery, caused performance to slip. The finding suggests the brain actively regulates when to learn and when to protect gains, potentially explaining plateaus in language learning as the brain shifts from a 'ready to learn' state to a stable one.
