Big brands are moving from large flagship stores to smaller neighbourhood outlets across India’s top cities, betting on proximity and walkability over destination shopping. Ben’s Cookies opened in Delhi’s Meherchand Market on Lodhi Road instead of Khan Market. IKEA launched a smaller format store in Delhi’s DLF Avenue mall, customising room sets for local homes. Cafe chain Boojee has chosen residential lanes in Bandra West over traditional commercial markets. The shift is driven by soaring rents, congested traffic and changing consumer habits. Harminder Sahni of Wazir Advisors said shoppers no longer travel an hour or more. High streets and small-format retail now account for roughly 60% of annual organised retail leasing across top cities, according to Anarock. Micro-markets span NCR’s Golf Course Extension Road, Bengaluru’s ORR-Whitefield-Sarjapur belt, and Thane in the MMR.
