Work is underway to extend steel baffles along 700 feet of Buffalo's seawall, building on a 78-foot pilot fish ladder completed in 2022. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the structure will slow currents along the Niagara River, allowing tiny emerald shiners to swim upstream toward Lake Erie. The project, part of a multi-million-dollar federal and state restoration effort, is expected to finish by December 2026. The fish passage is one of several projects restoring the Buffalo waterfront. Nearby, the US Army Corps of Engineers is placing clean sediment in Slip #3 to create 6.7 acres of shallow-water habitat by 2028. Other completed works include restored wetlands at Spicer Creek and Grass Island, funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
