# California drought permanently reduces Sacramento Valley aquifer storage

Intensive groundwater pumping during California’s 2020 to 2022 drought likely caused permanent storage loss in parts of the Sacramento Valley aquifer, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Satellite measurements found land subsidence of more than half a metre in some areas. Researchers say falling water pressure compressed fine underground sediments, collapsing pore spaces that cannot fully reopen after rain or snowmelt. The Sacramento Valley supports a major agricultural region, and its aquifer was considered less vulnerable than California’s southern Central Valley. The findings suggest prolonged drought and excessive pumping can damage even relatively resilient reserves. Groundwater remains usable, but the aquifer may hold less water during future wet years, complicating supplies during later droughts.
