# Govt evades deepfake data query, holds Meta technical talks

On August 7, the government moved to technical discussions with Meta after two days of questioning, sources told PTI. Meta outlined plans to address deepfakes, child sexual abuse material, and unlabelled synthetic content. The government demanded greater human oversight in content moderation and better understanding of Indian languages, with another meeting expected next week. Earlier, in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question by MP Karti Chidambaram on August 5, the government refused to disclose the number of deepfake complaints, takedown requests, or the percentage of removal orders complied with within three hours. Instead, it listed legal provisions under the IT Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and said the amended IT Rules of February 2026 require platforms to label AI content and preserve metadata.
