# Seven killed as water floods tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli

Seven workers died after water and debris flooded an under-construction tunnel of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) at Pipalkoti in Chamoli district, officials said on Friday. Twenty workers were trapped when the incident occurred on Thursday evening; thirteen others were rescued and are being treated at the district hospital in Gopeshwar. Two workers remain trapped. The tunnel is part of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project, being built by the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC). Multiple agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, CISF, ITBP, and the Army, have been deployed for rescue operations. NDRF commander Amrit Lal Meena said a large volume of water entered the tunnel, and four bodies have been recovered so far. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing.
