# Tata Sons chairman Chandrasekaran steps down after board rebuff

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran announced on Wednesday that he will not seek reappointment when his term ends on February 20, 2027, after failing to secure unanimous board support. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had recommended a five-year extension, but the proposal was blocked by one board member at a February 24 meeting. Sources told Livemint that Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata had sought a clear roadmap for the group's new businesses including Air India, semiconductors, and e-commerce, which posted a combined loss of Rs 29,924 crore in FY26. The BSE Sensex fell 604 points on the news, with TCS shares dropping nearly 6 per cent and other group stocks including Tata Motors and Tata Steel also declining. Chandrasekaran, who joined TCS as a programmer in 1987 and became chairman in 2017, has asked the board to decide on a successor quickly. The Shapoorji Pallonji Group's plan to monetise its 18.37 per cent stake in Tata Sons faces fresh uncertainty following the announcement.
