Severe storms struck Chicago on Tuesday, leaving more than 5 lakh customers without power and grounding all flights at both major airports, reports Times of India. A 99 mph wind gust was recorded in Gary, Indiana, and the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center preliminarily classified the system as a derecho, a long-lived windstorm that can cause damage comparable to tornadoes. Roofs were torn off homes, roads flooded, and schools canceled classes in parts of Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Earlier on Sunday, the National Weather Service had issued severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for the Chicago area, according to Times Now. Forecasters warned of wind gusts over 60 mph, hail the size of quarters, and a risk of tornadoes. The storms also hit Ohio, where nearly 2.9 lakh customers lost power and a person died when flooding blocked emergency responders, Governor Mike DeWine said.
