A child died and two students were injured after a concrete canopy collapsed at Al-Hasnain Public School in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, during an Independence Day programme on Saturday, India Today reports. The district administration and police reached the site and began examining the structure and possible safety lapses. India TV reports that children had climbed onto the canopy after the flag-hoisting ceremony, causing it to give way. India Today says the cause remains under investigation. In Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, one schoolboy died and another was critically injured after both fell into a rainwater-filled pit at a school sports ground, the Free Press Journal reports. Shiv Pathak was declared dead at a community health centre, while Subhash Soni was receiving treatment.
