A new study on Indian adults, reported by The Hindu, finds that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like emotional neglect are strongly linked to adult loneliness, even when surrounded by family. The research shows that childhood experiences account for nearly half of the variation in emotional difficulties. Globally, the WHO estimates one in six people experience loneliness, linked to 100 deaths per hour. The study suggests that simply increasing social contact may not help if early relationships taught the nervous system that closeness is unsafe.
