Chinese researchers have created a biodegradable plastic from bamboo cellulose that rivals conventional plastics in strength and heat resistance. The material, described in Nature, achieves a tensile strength of about 110 MPa and remains stable from -30°C to 100°C, resisting deformation even at 180°C. Made by breaking down bamboo cellulose with a deep eutectic solvent and then rearranging its molecules, the plastic can be moulded into complex shapes, retains 90% of its strength when recycled, and fully biodegrades in soil within 50 days. The team estimates production cost at $2,302 per tonne, with solvent recovery being a major factor.
