# CJI Surya Kant asks young lawyers to lead justice institutions

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant urged young law graduates and lawyers to take responsibility for the future, saying India had overcome formidable challenges in eight decades but still had much to accomplish. He was speaking at the Supreme Court Bar Association’s flag-hoisting ceremony at the Supreme Court on India’s 80th Independence Day. Kant said the legal profession had become more competitive, with steeper learning demands and pressure on new practitioners. He called on young lawyers to protect justice institutions and uphold liberty, equality and dignity. He also said lawyers had played an integral role in the freedom struggle, citing Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and others.
