A case has been booked against stand-up comedian Ratan Ranjan for posting a morphed image of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a social media post.
The case was booked following a complaint by Telangana Youth Congress president Jakkidi Shiva Charan Reddy, stating that the image was shared from Ranjan’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on July 5, and was accompanied by a derogatory caption.
According to the complaint, the post targeted a recent campaign by the All India Mahila Congress in Bihar aimed at distributing sanitary pads and raising awareness about menstrual hygiene among rural women. The morphed image of Rahul Gandhi was allegedly inserted on a sanitary pad, which the complainant said amounted to transmitting obscene material and undermined the dignity of women across the country. It also accused Ranjan of trivialising a sensitive issue and inciting hostility toward Rahul Gandhi and the Indian National Congress.
Further, the complaint also shared five X handles, including ‘@ArunKosli;, ‘@MrSinha’, ‘@AdvSunilSharma_’, ‘@Siddharth_00001’ and ‘@sanjaynirupam’, who reposted the post, allegedly that it was linked to a broader campaign of online misogyny and political provocation. Further investigation is underway.
