Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged all political parties to support 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort. He said the issue had been caught in political wrangling for 40 years and asked parties to help implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh called the appeal a “dishonest pitch”, saying Parliament unanimously passed the law in September 2023 but the government delayed its implementation. Rediff, citing PTI, reports that a separate Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill linked reservation to delimitation and was defeated in the Lok Sabha after receiving 298 votes against the required two-thirds majority.
