Domestic cotton prices have dropped by around Rs 1,200 per candy at Cotton Corporation of India auctions over the past two days, as easing global prices and rising arrivals weigh on the market. The New York cotton futures contract for December has fallen to around 80.13 cents per pound from a peak of 93 cents at the end of August. Trade sources say domestic prices are now at Rs 64,500-65,500 per candy, down from recent highs of Rs 70,000. Cottonseed prices have also fallen by Rs 300-400 per quintal to about Rs 4,600-4,700. Daily arrivals of the new crop are estimated at 50,000-55,000 bales of 170 kg each and are expected to increase sharply in October. Buyers are slow with mills holding stocks for 1-1.5 months, said Ramanuj Das Boob, a sourcing agent. The 2026-27 cotton crop is likely to be about 10% lower than last year due to deficit rain from June to September, according to Atul S Ganatra of Radhalakshmi Group.

## Indian Opinion Analysis

India's cotton market operates under the Cotton Corporation of India's price stabilisation mechanism, which auctions cotton when prices fall below the minimum support price. The current decline comes despite a projected 10% crop shortfall due to deficient monsoon rain in growing states. Mills holding 1-1.5 months of stock indicate downstream demand is soft, while rising arrivals from the new kharif crop will build inventory further. The government's duty-free import policy, if enacted, could add to domestic supply. The next price trigger will be the pace of arrivals in October and any policy announcement on import duties.
