# Delhi protests: CEC Jnanesh Kumar resignation demand, mass detentions 2026-10-10T18:31:20+00:00 | Politics | Indian Opinion Desk Corroboration: 4 independent outlets (32 source reports) Kakroch Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Deepke was arrested from his plane at Delhi airport on Saturday, 10 October, before he could join the Jantar Mantar protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Jnanesh Kumar. Delhi Police, with paramilitary forces, detained Deepke along with Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. Deepke's grandmother Savitri Bai Shankar Deepke died in Hingoli, Maharashtra, on the same day, police informed him and offered to let him return to Mumbai. Massive security measures were in place across central Delhi. Approximately 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed, 245 trains were cancelled, 57 metro stations were closed, and internet services were suspended in a 4-km radius around Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police cited a lack of prior notice, stating the CJP had applied only three days earlier, and referenced violence during a July 20 march. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, and Arvind Kejriwal, were also detained, with Gandhi calling for the protests to continue. ## Indian Opinion Analysis Tupaki.com frames the protests as a dramatic confrontation, highlighting Deepke’s personal tragedy and police ‘sensationalist’ arrests, while BBC.com provides a neutral, live-reporting account of the widespread security clampdown and opposition detentions. Sakshi.com amplifies Deepke’s parents’ criticism of the police action as an overreach, contrasting with the Delhi Police’s justification of preventive measures due to prior violence. The uniform wire copy from PTI, carried by BBC, notes the official numbers on deployments and cancellations. The pro-government stance is absent in the provided sources, the coverage is uniformly critical of the government’s response, differing only in tone. The key open question, as per multiple sources, is whether the CJP will continue its protest after 10 October, with Deepke having appointed Ajinkya Shinde as interim leader. Abhijit Deepke's grandmother's death on 10 October, while he was in police custody, is reported by Tupaki.com and Sakshi.com, adding a human dimension to the political story. ## Coverage Coverage: 32 sources, 1 government-critical, 28 neutral, 3 sensationalist - tupaki.com (sensationalist) Leads with Deepke's personal tragedy over protest details - tupaki.com (2) (sensationalist) Dramatic framing of police action and political battle - bbc.com (neutral report) Live coverage with multiple opposition reactions - bbc.com (2) (neutral report) Photo essay with factual captions, no editorializing - bbc.com (3) (neutral report) Balanced reporting including police justification - bbc.com (4) (neutral report) First-person accounts from protesters, no slant - bbc.com (5) (neutral report) Details security measures without advocacy - tupaki.com (3) (neutral report) Unrelated story about Canada mayoral candidate - tupaki.com (4) (neutral report) Unrelated entertainment story on actors - tupaki.com (5) (sensationalist) Speculative political angle on ED action against Jagan - tupaki.com (6) (neutral report) Unrelated entertainment interview - tupaki.com (7) (neutral report) Unrelated celebrity social media post - tupaki.com (8) (neutral report) Unrelated film announcement - 123telugu.com (neutral report) Unrelated film appreciation post by politician - tupaki.com (9) (neutral report) Unrelated article on celebrities' simple lives - sakshi.com (neutral report) Unrelated MSME policy announcement - sakshi.com (2) (neutral report) Unrelated cricket match report - sakshi.com (3) (neutral report) Unrelated UP election challenge - sakshi.com (4) (neutral report) Unrelated El Nino crisis meeting - sakshi.com (5) (government critical) Highlights parents' criticism of police action - sakshi.com (6) (neutral report) Unrelated US shooting report - sakshi.com (7) (neutral report) Unrelated film promotion interview - 123telugu.com (2) (neutral report) Unrelated film production update - tupaki.com (10) (neutral report) Unrelated trend piece on de-glam roles - 123telugu.com (3) (neutral report) Unrelated film budget report - tupaki.com (11) (neutral report) Unrelated film director update - tupaki.com (12) (neutral report) Unrelated film franchise speculation - tupaki.com (13) (neutral report) Unrelated social commentary on loneliness - tupaki.com (14) (neutral report) Unrelated political meeting in Chennai - tupaki.com (15) (neutral report) Unrelated local election strategy - tupaki.com (16) (neutral report) Unrelated reality show update - tupaki.com (17) (neutral report) Unrelated body-shaming commentary This brief was synthesised by AI from the 32 sources linked above, so one read covers every framing they carry.
