Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a deep red Bandhej turban with white, yellow and green dots at the Red Fort for India’s 80th Independence Day, Times Now News reports. He paired it with a white kurta-pyjama, a brown Nehru jacket and tricolour pocket squares. The choice echoed his first Independence Day turban in 2014, also red and Bandhej. The New Indian Express reports that designers Gaurang Shah and Ishita Singh see Independence Day dressing as a chance to celebrate India’s textile traditions rather than simply combine saffron, white and green. They recommend handlooms such as khadi, jamdani, kota, Banarasi and Chanderi, styled through sarees, kurtas and contemporary Indian silhouettes.
