# Doctors Say Medically Needed X-Rays Carry Very Low Risk

Doctors told Times Now News that routine X-rays use very low radiation doses and do not make patients radioactive. The radiation does not remain in the body, and the benefits of diagnosing fractures, infections and lung disease usually outweigh the small risk. Patients should ask why an X-ray is needed, what it may show and whether it will affect treatment. Pregnant women, or those who may be pregnant, must inform their healthcare provider. Children and pregnant women may receive extra precautions, with ultrasound or MRI considered where suitable. Unnecessary repeat scans should be avoided because radiation exposure accumulates over a lifetime. One radiologist cited by the outlet said a chest X-ray involves about 0.1 mSv, roughly 10 days of natural background radiation.
