Erectile dysfunction is persistent difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. Occasional problems after exhaustion, heavy drinking, poor sleep or emotional strain are common, but recurring difficulty that causes distress needs medical attention. The Hindu reports that ED can result from diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, obesity, heart disease, smoking, medicines, low testosterone, depression, anxiety and relationship strain. Because penile arteries are smaller than those supplying the heart, ED can sometimes appear before obvious cardiac symptoms. A clinician may review medical history, medicines, mood, sleep and sexual patterns, and advise checks such as blood glucose, cholesterol and morning testosterone. Patients should not stop prescribed medicines without medical advice. Psychological factors are real physical responses, not imagined problems.
