# Europe races to eradicate self-cloning marbled crayfish

Czech conservationists are leading targeted eradication efforts against newly discovered populations of self-cloning marbled crayfish in Moravia. The species reproduces through parthenogenesis, meaning a single female can produce genetically identical offspring without mating, allowing rapid population growth and spread of crayfish plague that threatens native European crayfish. The project is among the first 20 supported by the European Invasive Alien Species Rapid-Response Fund, co-funded by the EU and implemented through IUCN Save Our Species. Grants of €10,000 to €50,000 enable quick action. The European Environment Agency notes that despite progress, non-native species continue spreading, causing an estimated USD 28 billion in damages annually across Europe.
