Every official Indian flag sold domestically is woven by the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS) in a small village in Karnataka's Bagalkot district. The unit is the only one authorised to supply BIS-standard tricolours made from hand-spun khadi. The flags undergo a strict 13-step process involving hand-spinning, weaving, and dyeing, with each piece checked for colour and strength. The bureau of Indian standards mandates the flag must be made only from khadi; synthetic versions are banned. KKGSS has been the sole supplier since 1950, producing about 20 lakh flags annually.
