# One-year course cannot make a surgeon, say Maharashtra doctors

Doctors across Maharashtra are on strike against the state government's decision to allow BHMS (homeopathy) graduates to register with the Maharashtra Medical Council after completing a one-year Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP). Former IMA president Dr Dilip Bhanushali told Times Now that India has 835 medical colleges producing nearly 35,000 doctors annually, and there is no shortage justifying the move. He argued that a one-year course cannot replace years of medical training, especially for surgical procedures. Dr Rajat Agrawal, a Gondia-based radiologist, said prescribing a drug is only the final step, and clinical judgment comes from bedside training, not short courses. The Bombay High Court has directed doctors to call off the strike, but the medical fraternity insists the issue remains unresolved.
