Part of the multi-billion-dollar Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, it is designed to capture and clean polluted water before it reaches the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon. The project uses wetland plants as a natural filter to trap sediment and absorb nutrients from agricultural and urban runoff, reducing harmful algal blooms and stabilising salinity levels critical for marine life. The facility includes 43,900 feet of perimeter levees, an interim pump station, and 19 internal culverts. It is now entering a vegetation 'grow-in' phase to develop root systems that effectively remove phosphorus and nitrogen.
