The case was registered on 26 July following her complaint, The Hans India reports. The woman alleged that Rao physically exploited her on the promise of marriage, secretly recorded private videos and took a large sum of money for purported real estate investments. She also claimed he accessed her phone and contacted a female friend. Police booked him under Sections 69 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
