A youth reportedly attacked a middle-aged woman with a sharp object during a heated argument over a seat on an APSRTC bus travelling from Tekkali and Dimmidijola of Nandigama mandal, Srikakulam district on Friday.

The argument began when the woman was denied a seat seat. In the heat of the moment, the youth allegedly threatened the middle-aged woman with a sharp object, typically used in his mechanic shop.

A video of the incident became viral, and APSRTC officials initiated an inquiry into the incident. The bus driver and conductor informed the higher officials that such incidents have become frequent after the launch of the ‘‘Stree Shakti’‘ scheme, which offers free bus travel to women.

They said that male passengers who purchase tickets are unable to get seats as there has been a surge in women commuters’ since August 15, 2025 when the scheme began.
