A former US uranium processing plant in Ohio, part of America's nuclear weapons programme for nearly four decades, has been transformed into a 1,050-acre wildlife preserve. The $4.4 billion cleanup of the Fernald site, completed in 2006, removed 1 million tons of waste and treated contaminated groundwater across a 225-acre plume. The site now features wetlands, prairies and forests, with a LEED-certified Visitors Center using a ground-source heat pump and a bio-wetland for wastewater treatment.
