# Jharkhand students protest transfer, block chief flees after slap

Students of a state-run school in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district blocked a road for nearly seven hours on Thursday to protest the transfer of their headmaster, Malay Kumar Singh. The agitation, which began three days ago at the High School in Kandi block, intensified after block chief Pinku Pandey allegedly slapped a student during a confrontation. India Today reports that the students then damaged Pandey’s vehicle, forcing him to flee to a police station. Hindustan Times quotes the district education officer saying the department agreed to cancel the transfer and keep Singh on deputation, after which the protest ended. Garhwa SP Ashutosh Shekhar said there were allegations of vandalism but no complaint had been filed.
