ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Virat Kohli was expected to put on a masterclass in his landmark 300th ODI during the Champions Trophy 2025 match against New Zealand. He also walked out to bat inside the powerplay after India lost Shubman Gill. Kohli, who was coming into the match on the back of a match-winning hundred against Pakistan , looked at ease and it seemed another big one is loading. But unfortunately, the happiness was short-lived, as he perished for 11 off 14 balls.
Kohli fell prey to a stunning one-handed catch by Glenn Phillips at backward point. Kohli cut the ball hard and it seemed it was on it’s way for a boundary, but Phillips had other ideas. But what stole the show was not the catch, instead, it was Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja trying to decode the catch. Jadeja, who is a supreme fielder himself, seemed to be explaining to Kohli how Phillips took that.
Meanwhile, India have recovered from those early setbacks inside the first powerplay. Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied things with a solid partnership before the latter perished. Iyer and KL Rahul are in the middle and the score is 138 for four in 32 overs. Iyer is currently on 57* off 84 balls and Rahul has just walked in and is on seven. Both these players would now be key for the Men in Blue if they want a challenging total to bowl at. For NZ, Matt Henry has been their best bowler, he has picked up two wickets already.
For the unversed, India and New Zealand have both qualified for the semi-final and hence this match is inconsequential from that point of view. But yes, the outcome of this game would decide the semi-final line-ups. From Group B, South Africa and Australia are the two teams that have qualified.
